The Area Agency on Aging of East Texas offers diverse volunteer opportunities through its Benefits Counseling, Long-Term Care Ombudsman, and Evidence-Based Intervention programs. Find the volunteer opportunity that matches your interests, and apply today.

Benefits Counseling Volunteer
The Area Agency on Aging of East Texas needs volunteers who are interested in working with seniors and people with disabilities in our Benefits Counseling Program. The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) has counselors are available to provide one-on-one help with Medicare questions or problems. The Area Agency on Aging and SHIP are looking for volunteers in the Benefits Counseling Program to perform outreach and learn the complexities of Medicare to successfully counsel consumers. Benefits Counseling Volunteers should have the ability to get along well with others, a sensitive and caring attitude, good written and oral communication skills, and a willingness to learn about Medicare benefits. Insurance agents, insurance brokers, and financial planners are not eligible to volunteer with the Benefits Counseling program, click here.

Ombudsman Volunteer
The Area Agency on Aging of East Texas needs volunteers to advocate for the residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities in its 14-county service area. Ombudsmen are specially trained and certified individuals who advocate for quality care in Texas nursing facilities. Volunteer Ombudsmen provide information to residents and families about their rights; help identify additional resources in or out of the nursing facility; and assist in the resolution of complaints by, or on behalf of, nursing facility residents. Volunteer Ombudsmen receive training about nursing home resident's rights and how to handle resident and facility communications. Evidence-Based Intervention Programs Volunteer
Become a Master Trainer or Lay Leader teaching classes throughout the community such as Chronic Disease Self-Management, Diabetes Self-Management, Chronic Pain, Fall Prevention/ Matter of Balance, and Tai Chai. These classes are designed to help adults 60 years of age and older reduce health fears that comes with aging. These classes include group discussion, problem-solving strategies, and increasing the physical activity levels of those concerned. The class consists of eight two-hour sessions.
